I have the sweetest and softest snowflake sugar cookies for you!
Between college sports, food festivals, a happening theatre and music scene, first-rate restaurants and notable vineyards, we’re rarely at a loss for things to do in our town. And although there’s no denying that each of these has put Central New York on the map, there’s one thing that consistently lands Syracuse on a Top Ten if not Number One spot on any list ——> SNOW.
We find ourselves at the top of many Snowiest City lists each year thanks to geography. Syracuse gets hit consistently by three major types of snowstorms: Nor’easters, Lake Effect and Alberta Clippers. You could call it a ‘triple threat’ in the world of weather. (syracuse.com)
And although there are times when I wonder if I can handle even one more day of Ugg boots and down-filled jackets taking up precious real estate in my closets – there’s something so satisfying about sitting inside where it’s toasty while peering outside at gently falling snowflakes where it’s cold.
I suppose I can handle it for a few more years…
So we were in another snowy town recently, one that also happens to be known for its icy accumulation – Lake Placid…(we must really like snow)…when I stumbled upon this adorable cookie cutter.
It came with a simple recipe for sugar cookies, which I modified a bit, and then I proceeded to have fun playing with color.
As you know, I’m not much of a baker, but I do enjoy my sweets every now and again, and when they’re this cute – all the better!
I made a double batch of white icing and used half to create the icy blues for decorating. Just a couple drops of blue food coloring for the lighter and a few more drops for the darker.
I painted the cookie with a solid color, white or blue, then made snowflake designs using the other colors by using toothpicks to dot and swirl.
And no two are the same! Of course…
Have I mentioned how fun this is? This is fun!
A great activity with the kids should you get hit by Ol’ Man Winter, too!
Buon Appetito!

I am envious of those inspiring moments of snow falling. So far in Los Angeles, we have had record-breaking rain and in our mountains, unprecedented snow fall. We are not usually known for that (as you all are), but we are thankful as we need the rain/snow for our California drought situation. Will think of you when I make snow flake cookies in the future. Thanks for sharing this fun recipe.

I know! What you guys are experiencing is crazy, although, necessary! My daughter lives in LA and we’ve been watching through her eyes! So happy you like the cookies! Thanks, friend!

Thank you, Karen!! 🙂
Kathy @ Beyond the Chicken Coop says
Since we can’t change the weather, we might as well embrace it! These snowflake cookies are so pretty! Now if only the snow would disappear as quickly as these cookies! 🙂 Stay warm!
Annie says
Hahaha! You got that right! Thank you, my friend! 🙂
TammyRenea @SanPasqualsKitchen says

Wow! I am flattered, Annie. I am so loving these snow inspired cookies. I am sure they taste so delish. My little one wants me to bake the same cookies for her. Thanks for this! 🙂

Glad the snow inspired you to make such adorable cookies, Annie – they are so cute and I’m sure delicious!
Annie says
I’ve had a lot of inspiration this year! 😉 Maybe a little too much! 🙂 Thanks, friend!
Nicoletta @sugarlovespices says
Those are adorable, Annie! I bought a snowflake cookie cutter too, but haven’t used it yet, I’ll wait till next winter, I do not want to call for snow! 😉 Here in Alberta, Canada, it hasn’t bad this past week, and the snow is melting quickly. I am not much of a snow person, coming from Rome, but if it involves making lovely and delicious sugar cookies like yours I might change my mind 😉 .
Annie says
It’s funny you mention that…my daughter was asking me the other day if Rome gets snow…now I can tell her! We were hit pretty hard this week however it’s supposed to warm up this weekend! 🙂 Thanks, Nicoletta!

These are the sweetest cookies Annie! Love white and blue. I remember those snow storms from my college years in Oswego and wonder how I made it through. But when we cut class on the first 50 degree day and paraded around in our shorts, we felt like we won the lottery! Stay warm friend!
Annie says
I can imagine that day! Everything is so relative…50 degrees to us is a heat wave, where as in many other places they’d be sporting a winter jacket! So happy you like the cookies! Thanks, Cathy!
Mary Ann | The Beach House Kitchen says
I find watching the snow come down so cozy and relaxing too Annie! As long as I don’t have to drive in it. These cookies are absolutely beautiful! It looks like you put a lot of love and effort into them! Bet they taste just as good! Happy weekend! Stay warm!
Annie says
Thank you so much MaryAnn! It was fun to work with toothpicks! Have a great weekend, my friend! 🙂
Cheyanne @ No Spoon Necessary says
We got snow just once this winter, and other than that it’s been unseasonably warm. So please enjoy the snow for me as I find it so peaceful and beautiful!! Just like these cookies!! I have a serious soft spot for sugar cookies and these look just perfect! So fun and absolutely delicious! I adore your snowflake decoration, Annie!! These are almost too pretty to eat.. almost because you KNOW I’m going to eat these by the dozen! Cheers, friend!
Annie says
That is crazy to me! It’s been known to start before Halloween and has gone as late as Mother’s Day… It takes a lot of getting used to! Thanks for your sweet words, Chey! 🙂
Fida | Sweet and Savoury Pursuits says
I’m in Canada but not very far from Syracuse, so I know what you mean about all the snow, it’s a this time of the year when I get to the I’m fed up with all the snow stage, especially after my snow removal company decides to close down mid-season, right before two big snowfalls!! Your snowflake cookies are gorgeous, I love the swirls and patterns you drew on them!
Annie says
Well that’s no fun! That company missed out on some big business! I keep telling myself – spring is just days away…(kinda 😉 )… Thanks for stopping by, my friend! 🙂
Stacey @ The Sugar Coated Cottage says
We have gotten very little snow this winter but tons of rain which is odd for Michigan so I’m a tad jealous ?. Sugar cookies are a must on snow days and I’m loving that your cookie cutter has a handle on it! These look yummy and are decorated beautifully! Take care.
Annie says
Hmmmm – these weather patterns…crazy! Thanks so much! I never decorate cookies so this was an adventure! Have a great weekend, my friend! 🙂
Dawn - Girl Heart Food says
Speaking of snow, we just had about 65 cms (or about 2 feet) over the past two days! It has been crazy!!! But, it is definitely something relaxing and cozy knowing that your kinda stuck inside when it’s so cold and snowy out, isn’t there? What a cute project these cookies are! And they just look gorgeous! I just love the idea like you said that no two are exactly alike, like a snowflake. And I bet they taste extra yummy, especially with a nice cup of cocoa 😉 Pinned! Stay warm, my friend! XO
Annie says
Yep – sounds like us! Leaves nothing left to do but eat cookies…play cards…watch movies….read for pleasure…and drink cocoa! Stay warm, my friend! Have a great weekend! XO
Marisa Franca @ All Our Way says
Those are gorgeous cookies. I do have a snowflake cookie cutter whereby I have smaller cutters that punch out lacey effects. Now I like how you did it. I believe it would be easier and they are oh so pretty!! I would love a snowflake cookie any time of year. Have a great day.
Annie says
These do sound easier but a lacey effect sounds worth the trouble (when there’s time)! Snowflakes are just beautiful no matter how they’re formed! Have a great day, my friend!
Karen @ Seasonal Cravings says
We haven’t had any snow this year so I’m a bit jealous but I don’t envy you digging out of that mess. I’m glad you found a way to occupy your time indoors with these cute cookies. They look perfect! Mine never look that neat!
Annie says
I can’t imagine a winter with no snow. That’s just amazing to me! hahahah! Thanks for your sweetness, Karen!! 🙂
Gayle @ Pumpkin 'N Spice says
You sure did get hit with some snow recently! I was telling my husband that usually we (here in Chicago) get your weather first, and then the east coast gets it, but luckily, not the case for us here in the Midwest! 🙂 It sure is pretty though when looking out the window. And these sugar cookies look gorgeous, Annie! So festive for this time of year!
Annie says
You know what’s funny…I actually prefer when it’s snowing vs. just cold and gray…it is so pretty! And now that Spring is close – it’s easier to handle knowing the end is near! Thanks for the cookie love, my friend!
